Reading With Children Knowledge Base
How can we encourage our children to learn to enjoy reading? As a college teacher, sadly, I see many high school graduates pass my way who have great difficulty reading any book, text or otherwise. They often show a great distain for reading. This includes material presented on-line. I have seen how the love for reading developed early in childhood carries over to make a person an effective reader of material necessary to function and perform adequately in our modern society. I also know that it takes time and practice to become an effective reader, thus, the time and conditions necessary to integrate readership into ones life involve more than just the time spent and text material supplied in school. As parents, what techniques have you used at home to encourage and continue to encourage your children to develop a love for reading?
What kind of teacher would have children reading about euthanizing an infant in 7th grade. Poynette WI does? The teachers here have 7th and 8th graders reading books that is very descriptive about like the above. That book tells how a boy watches his father inject the needle into the infants forehead because the veins in the arms are to small and how the baby jerks and cries and then lays still stares off with glassy eyes and watches his father dispose of the baby. Another book describes dog weaseling, pig copulation and slaughtering a pet pig, all very descriptive. My son and I cried. Why would teachers force this stuff on kids and then wear a catholic necklace? These books won awards in 1972 and 73 but wasn't smoking at 16 legal, drinking at 18 and marijuana and LSD and sex with anyone was ok. But 30 some years later teachers still have kids reading these books even though they are #14 and #17 on the top 100 challenged books that should be banned. What could a teacher be thinking? Is it no wonder kids are mixed up these days when reading like this is supported by a school
What is the best age to begin reading the Harry Potter books to my children? I have two children. One is five and one is three months old. The oldest has had to deal with the death of his maternal grandfather, his paternal grandmother, his maternal great-grandmother, and his paternal great-grandfather. He is scared sometimes at night and has a very sensitive heart-- he's very disturbed by the violence of others. I am wondering when to introduce the kids to the books, since they will all be out before they begin reading any of them. How to pace them, when to start. When will it mean the most, since there is no longer any waiting between releases. I have not read any of the books in the series myself.
What age did you start reading to your children? I started to read to my daughter at about 4 months but have recently stopped because she really is NOT interested and if she does sit still long enough to acknowledge what i am doing she just want to attack and eat the book (she has recently become mobile). She is a wiggle worm and just does not sit still or like to be held for any longer than 2 mins.....so now i feel guilty for not reading to her more, my health nurse says it is a MUST do task to increase their vocabulary...what do you think???
How can I teach reading and math skills to children? I would like to teach my younger godchildren how to read and install in them math and critical thinking skills. I especially what to encourage the girls to have an interest in math and science, which girls have a tendency to like a 'softer' subjects like English, social studies, etc. I want the boys to do the same as well. How do I go about doing this? Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
