Reading with Children

Kids Reading List Knowledge Base

Is it Connecticut only or the whole US asks kids to read books and list them during summer vacation? I'm getting really angry because our teachers will make us write about one book that we read this summer! I also think this is unfair because it's our vacation and the school can't do anything to make it bad. In the Philippine Islands where I used to lived, when we get out of school for summer, teachers won't even ask us to read something only parents do that! Somehow, summer vacation in the Philippine Islands is better than summer vacation here!
List of Best Fiction to Read to My Kids? I am searching everywhere for a good list or two of the best fiction to read to my six- and four-year old kids. They loved Kipling's Jungle Book, and Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. I'm looking desperately for others that would be on that same level, to read to them. Not finding much so far. Individual recommendations or any good sources of lists would be much appreciated.
Course reading list for 12th grade students at private Catholic high school? I'm preparing to create my own syllabus for teaching senior-level English at a private Catholic high school. These kids are already well-read, so please do not suggest the most obvious standards, such as Shakespeare or Chaucer. Rather, I'm looking for a wide variety of both past and modern day texts, ranging from novels to poetry to drama, that you feel would be beneficial to their whole education. (NOTE: Don't be afraid to suggest something because it is not specifically religious or even anti-Catholic; the board is very open-minded when it comes to literary value). I would love to hear from some teachers on this one, and would also be thrilled to hear any student input (what are you guys interested in reading?).
Can anyone name the book series described in the details listed? It was reading books for kids in early 90s.? When I was a child, working on reading comprehension, the school I attended in the south of Britain had a series of books that gradually got harder as you progressed. The series was colorfully illustrated and had featured blue men that were dressed in kilts and other Scottish garb. They lived in a valley and went about daily chores or adventures. As the series got to the end, some of the characters were captured by a beast that lived in a cave above the valley and were shackled to the cave walls. I think I got the details relitively close, but some stuff may be a tad off (it's been 14 years since I've seen the books at least). Do you have any idea what the series is called? I'd really love to try and find copies or images from them.
How can I help my kids math, reading & writing, science, etc? My elder daugher will turn 10 soon (grade 4).I found her school learning schedule is pretty loose. If we do not find some homework for her, she can watch TV, play with dog, or do some art work all day. I felt it's time to share part of my time with her to help her do more math problem solving, Read & write and science. I can not find a good pace to follow. Sometimes, searching internet can find some site with list of questions which are good but felt can not follow for a long term. Who can introduce me what kind of good material I can find? Tell me what you do? Share some of your successful stories? My goal is helping her build a strong acadmic base, self-learning ability in the next couple of years. I am living in Alberta, Canada. Thanks a lot.

How many pages are in the book "The A-List" by Zoey Dean? I read the book "The A-List" by Zoey Dean? because we had to teach younger kids that reading can be fun, but i already returned the book and I need to know how many pages are in the book, so if anyone knows, i would be so appreciative!
Any tips for getting kids motivated for school? Ok, we started off the summer with great intentions - reading lists, summer workbooks, camps, educational visits to museums, etc... but now it has all boiled down to video games, tv shows and sleeping in the morning. Yikes! I worry that my kids are not going to be focused on their studies this year. Any pearls of wisdom from experienced parents or kids who have 'been there' will be greatly appreciated.
So what else do Twilight kids read? (Genuine question.)? I'm curious how many of the Twilight fans out there mix Real Literature with pop fiction and how many do not, so I've decided to find out what you, Twilight Reader, read. I know, it probably sounds like a patronizing question--but I'm honestly curious! When I was a kid, I read Christopher Pike and Lois Duncan alongside Hermann Hesse and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and firmly believe that reading is a matter of balance between the popular and the extraordinary. So what else is on your reading list that _isn't_ a class assignment?
Did your parents make you read as a child? Or as parents now are you making your kids read? I remember having to complete the summer reading list from the library in order to go out and play. A book a week at least but then I got to play as much as I wanted to. I think it helped my vocabulary out immensely as I went on in school and I love to read now but it doesn't seem like kids are reading that much anymore. What do you think?
Are ther any search and find games for kids too young to read? I have a 4 year old that loves the finding the objects on the Big Fish games, but she can't read the clue list yet. She wants to do it by herself. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Teachers, what is your favorite quote or fact about reading and what it does for children? If you could tell parents one thing that would prompt them to read to their kids, what would it be? Please list sources, if applicable.
do you think that kids should be able to read and add to the hot or not list on the bath room doors? A. Duh, is there any other way to find out what's popular B. i'm a parent and if i found out that my kid was writing on walls they would be liveing in thear room! C. How cares what "they" think! D. who gives a crap!
What are recommended activities in Hong Kong in August for family with kids? We have kids aged 4 and 10 and will stay in Hong Kong for three days. Please help recommend the top 3-4 things/places to do/go. On my list, from reading other Q/A's: The Peak, Night Ferry Ride, Stanley Market (?), Big Buddha (where?). What/where else? Thanks!

Movies that are rated PG-13 or R can not be on the list ! Thanx for helping ! xo379 thank you so much ! you found the books for me ! thank you. do you think that you could help me find some movies ?
Is there an online website where my kids can take an AR test from home? Since it is Summer, I am having my kids take out books from the library but since they are reading long chapter books now (not short ones that I can skim through and test them), I was wondering if there was a website where I can have them choose from a list of books where they can read then take an AR test. Does anyone know?
Do Kids Get Too Much Homework these days? should kids get homework at all those charter and pilot schools are the worst they go from like 7 in the morning to 330 in the afternoon they expect us to work our butts off at school then come home, work our butts off some more, then wake up and go through that whole thing again?! but if we fall asleep we get punished for it. I am not a robot! and then they have the audacity to give us homework on the weekend the only time we have free time, during the holidays we get projects during the summertime thay give us summer reading lists though those are not that bad they seem to want to fit in work anywhere they possibly can! What do you think?
what age do kids start to read basic words like cat? my son started reading words (see list below) at the age of 25 months old.... it is not only by reading written words on book, but he can read my actual handwriting, and even when i just recite the letters (spelling)... he would read the letters individually, then at the end, say the word... no pictures or anything to give him clues.... he knows his alphabets (recognize and recite), count up to 29, all his shapes (trapezoid, octagon, pentagon included), all his colors... he is now 26.5 months and can read at least 8 words. cat, cow, car, dog, mommy, daddy, duck, calvin (his name)...i forgot the other ones... WHAT IS THE NORM?
how do you rate reading levels? HOw do you know whether a book is in your child's "reading level"... My kids are in a reading program, and they can only list books that are in their reading level or above...but I don't know how to tell? Is there any way?
need help where to download stuff and a list of songs for a kid party read the detail? where can i download new or old club songs for kids and i need a list of songs for kids for a party or just clean virsom they are in 5th and 4th grade
Have you ever looked at the banned and challenged book list in your area? Where I live the list is pretty long. Some of the more ridiculous titles included in the list are: The Giver by Lois Lowry Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Lord of the Flies by William Golding These books have all been challenged and in some cases removed from schools and libraries. I've read all of them, and I wouldn't hesitate to give any one of them to my kids, once they are at the appropriate age. We home school. I agree that there are some books I hope my kids never read, but I don't believe that this kind of censorship is effective at all. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't like it, don't read it! What are your thoughts? Am I missing something here?
What books were you required to read in High School? I'm a total reading freak, I love books, but my high school started this new reading program where they don't make kids read books if they don't want to, which pretty much means that no one reads (except me). If you could post a list of books you had to read in high school, it would help me out a lot. : )
(teachers only) How can I get my class of 32 7th graders (mostly boys) interested in "The Call of the Wild"? This particular reading class is only 30-40 min. each day. The novel is a required reading along with four other novels for the year. I tried to have them read it themselves but the vocab. is too difficult for them. This is a Title 1 school and most of these kids are reading at the fourth grade level. I am required to have them read it themselves or to have it read to them (by the way, they cannot take these books out of the room to read at home---school rule). I have given them vocab. lists for each chapter and I'll be reading it to them next week. Any other suggestions. I've researched tons of activities that go with the novel but with the minimal time I have I won't be able to do much more than just read-alouds if I'm going to get through all these novels this year.
If i sent a message to a kid and then deleted him off my ps3 friends list would he recieve and be able to read i sent a message to a kid off my friends list on my PS3 and then i deleted him does he still get the message and be able to read it?
I heard in the Diary of Anne Frank she thinks about being with a girl? I was thinking about having my kids read this book should I? They are in 8th garde, I teach at a Christian school but this was on the book list provided to me by my boss. Then today one of the studnets said she though about being witha girl in the book. Is it really all that and is it true? What do you think? BTW.. I read it a long time ago too.. like back in 9th garde or something and I dont remember that part of the book. I do plan to read it ,but over Christmas Break. They wont begin until once we return from break. But I would like to tell the forsure so they can buy it over the two weeks they are out. Thanks
My husband made a psycho list? He made this list of things I have to OBEY by if he gets me knocked up. He made a list of prerequisites. Things I need to do before getting knocked up and things I have to obey by afterwards. This is in his own words...his list reads... lose weight (meaning me cuz my husband's boney), Strip Club (meaning he can go to strip club), Lexapro (meaning for me to STOP Lexapro before I get preggers cuz he thinks it's dangerous), divorce (meaning stop threatening divorce), cursing, relationship with my parents, allowance- Run all purchases by me, Independent, clean, cook, let me hike/photography as much as i want, NO 3 KIDS ( I want 3 kids so if he gives me a 2nd I should not beg for a 3rd). THAT'S THE END OF HIS LIST. Does this say my husband is not ready for kids? What does this psycho list tell you about my marriage and about my husband? babyphat- OMG wow did u make a strong good point! LOL. Yes he's very bony and I could say he should go to a gym but I don't because I'm happy with who he is. hh- yes he's always been controlling but the control just gets worse with time. I feel so miserable!
Do you think things written for kids are too patronizing? I once read a book in a bookstore called "101 Things To Do Before You Die" and asked for it for Christmas. My mom made a mistake and bought "101 Things To Do Before You're Old and Boring." I thought it would be just as fun when I realised that all the movies on their "to see" list are all rated PG-13. It went on further to describe all the foods on the "get to like these foods" list as; broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts and coconut. I was insulted when I realised the book was written for kids between 12-18! When I was 12, I was old enough to have gotten over a dislike for green veggies. For goodness sakes. And you had better bet I saw Terminator a dozen times by then, as well. I thought... I know adults want to keep kids as kids forever, but as a kid, doesn't that get obnoxious?
Do you like reading books online? I've seen lots of questions about reading books online. I found the site below for anyone that is interested. My Books and More Books http://www.my-booksandmorebooks.net is a web site that has lists of adult books that can be read online on the Adult_Books page and children's books and fairy tales that are either read to children on the computer or can be read from selected books a lot of which have illustrations on the Kids_Page. For people interested in the most recent book from their favorite author there is a New_Books page which lists a lot of sources for finding new books as well as a short list of the newest books that I have found. That page also has a link to the library and a new site link to "Library Elf" which helps you keep track of when your books are due so that you will never have to pay a fine again. There are many other pages that may be of interest.
Can anyone recommend some really great read aloud books for about the grade two level? We homeschool. I'm looking for books that will be read aloud to my three kids. We've read a lot of the more common ones such as Charlotte's Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We are presently reading The Little Prince. Next on the list is The Jungle Book. I need great, engaging stories that are not overly wordy or cerebral. The kids are still fairly little and at this point our emphasis is on enjoying the story rather than on vocabulary and grammar. Thanks.
I need a list of positive, kid friendly words that begin with the letter "R".? I would prefer nouns (ie: a person place or thing). I'm doing themed bullentin boards and I need something positive to go behind "Reading". So far all I could think of is Reading Rockstars, but I don't think the kids I'm working with will relate to rock music so well.
What book should I read to my seven year old boy next? His favorite has been 'Where The Red Fern Grows'. He liked 'Little Britches', but he found 'Treasure Island's' language difficult to follow. Is there a LIST of "Read Aloud books" that breaks down what kids like at what age? Oh yeah he loved Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
The local schools have taken "The Giver" off the reading lists b/c of complaints from parents? If you are familiar with this older-children's book, you know that is about a "utopia" where people are de-sexed and are arranged into families--only one person in a community is chosen as the reciptical of "bad memories" or negative thoughts. A newborn baby is euthanized beacause he is a twin, and twins throw off the whole balance of the community. The whole summation of the book is that it is a tragedy that people have their free will taken from them in the name of "peace." I think that it is a good, thought-provoking book and my son enjoyed reading it several times. (Mind you, it is for teens and older kids) So why is it banned? I'm a Christian, but I am certainly not an advocate in censoring rational thought because it may be disturbing.
hit list? please read the story, it will make tons of sense? a kid at my school has a hit list. and he told some people that he's bringing a gun to school and was going to shoot evryone on the list. well it ended up getting to my Best Friend. she told me. so then i told one of my other friend, who e-mailed her teacher who it was and what L.A, Social studies, and Reading class he's in. and he mother is calling the school tomorrow morning. did we do the right thing? what is the kid was just joking?
