How do you help a child who have difficulty in reading and comprehension?

  1. Have then read a short part then ask questions about what they just read. Maybe have them checked for dyslexia.
  2. practice, practice and more practice! Hearing the parent speak properly can help too! It would be.....How do you help a child who HAS difficulty in reading.....
  3. Read with him and ask him to tell you what he just read. Practice makes perfect, in most cases. If that doesn't work, have him tested for learning disabilities--if he has dyslexia or something similar, that has it's own set of tools to cope with the problem.
  4. I'm a firm believer that the best thing you can do is read to them a lot. They will pick up lots of vocabulary and comprehension skills, which they can then apply to their own reading.
  5. Go back to childrens books. Read with him. Help him understand the alphabet - it is the basis for all words. Each letter makes a sound. Read simple books together (3 and 4 letter words), and have him read outloud also. Start small and work your way up. Reading with your child is the best way to teach them. Good luck.
  6. The best thing that I can think of is to read all of the time! While reading take turns reading a sentence or paragraph or page. All depending where the child is at in reading. Then before it is the next persons turn stop and talk about what you just read. Practice makes perfect. I have a four year old and sometimes I think that what I am saying to him goes in one ear and out the other. Then he surprises me and retells the story or event. Makes me feel like I am actually accomplishing something as a parent.
  7. When I was younger I hate a lot of trouble learning to read and write/spell. I had reading and writing lesson which helped from when I was 8. When I was 15 and still playing with barbies and dolls a doctor told my parents I was just really artistic. I draw and paint a lot, since having the freedom of creative art I got confident and it's help me write and spell. I see words as pictures so I remember how to spell them. My reading still isn't great, but I think making words in to pictures is the best way. So people don't have medical problems they just learn different! Hope it helps!
  8. Does this child attend school? There should be help available from his/her school. They can use various tests to assess if s/he has any learning disabilities and then will work with you and your child to overcome them. Look to the school first for help. If they cannot help you then they will surely point you in the right direction. If your child is not yet in school then contact his/her pediatrician to find out the best approach to this situation. Plus the child's Dr. can give you referrals.
  9. Depends on the age but it can be done. You first have them tested for learning disabilities. My daughter is deaf she now has a cochle implant is in th e3rd grade and makes a B in reading. I take her to a place called the reading center twice a week. I read with her every day. My 6 year old who is perfectly healthy is having a much more difficult time than she evr did. Hooked on phonics REALLY does work, but the very best thing yu cna do as a parent at home is read read read to your child, teach them to memorize sight words. Work on sounds, my son's k5 teacher gave me a list with a sign language type gesture for each sound, for example the sound of "a" the short a, you mimick eating an aaaaple, for z you zzzip ypur pants, for "y" ypu play wth a yyyyoyyyo. for T you ttttouch your hand. Once we got the list he was well on his way to reading. Everywhere we go I ask him to spell things or point out letterss, on bumper stickers, in the grocery store, billboards it is a never endinmg learning game
  10. i would tutor the child and help as much as possible
  11. Smack him
  12. Well I have just had to start really working with my daughter on this. We went to the book store and got some chapter books her speed. We spend 20 min every night reading some times I read and then some times she does, but after each chapter we stop and discuss what that chapter was about and how she would handle situations if she was the main character. Hope this helps!
